The Last One

As I type up my last post for the summer, I have to say thank you. To all the parents, campers and staff, thanks for giving me a summer that I will remember forever. Gathered in the the Steves Hall Commons Room for the last time, I look around and see smiling faces laughing and enjoying each others presence. This group of kids will never be reunited like this ever again. When a lot of us will come back in the fall for Vocare, Steves Hall will be gone but the memories will still be fresh in our minds.
We finished off this week with an emotional Bonfire where the staff was serenaded by a couple of session staff and our Staff Director, Emily Vandewalle. Some tears were shed as we all took it in. Never again will I see the stars shining so bright. The flames of the fire gave us just enough dim light in the background to let us see the faces of bittersweet smiles.
This week was great. I am so glad that we got to finish the summer with Primary campers. These kids gave us the energy we needed to finish this summer strong.

As I sign off for the last time, I want you all to know that this place is special. The staff and kids that come through these gates come at the times they do because God planned it that way. I hope that one day when I come back all grown up, I can see the little Primary and Intermediate campers on staff loving each other just as we did.

The Summer Staff of 2012 will always live on in my heart.

Love to all,
     Lena B.

The NEW Movie Time!

Sorry for the complications with the last video. Unfortunately, I had to take out all of the musci from the video so that it was able to play in YouTube, therefore the video might not be as fun to watch but it is still a great one!

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Greetings from the most wonderful place on earth – Camp Capers!

It is the most wonderful place because it is one of those amazing places where God’s Spirit roams freely capturing the hearts and imaginations of young and old alike.  In this place many of God’s children, myself included, discovered the intense love of God and a life-changing invitation to follow Jesus in service and ministry.

As Dean of Primary Camp B I am privileged to share this week with the campers and staff here this week.  I am privileged to be a part of what God desires to do in the lives of His children.  I am privileged to  watch God continue to form and grow both campers and staff into “the stature of the fullness of God.” (Eph. 4.13)

We are spending this week talking about “Abounding in Hope” (Romans 15.13).  Today we heard about Moses and the people of Israel’s journey of hope to the land of promise.  Over the next couple of days we will look at other Biblical stories in which God’s people experience and extend hope.  Our time in chapel both in the morning and in the evening is a wonderful time of learning about our God of abundant hope and learning many new songs praising Him.

Of course, the campers are making nametags in Arts and Crafts, playing Capture the Flag, swimming, eating wonderful food and doing all the great things that makes a week at Camp so much fun.  Mealtimes are rocking with cabin chants and everyone is enjoying spending time with friends old and new.  In short, we are all having a wonderful time!

Thank you for entrusting your campers to those of us who serve here this week.  Know that we are doing our best to make sure your camper has an amazing time and, more importantly, experiences the love of God in a way that will shape their lives for eternity!

Blessings,
The Rev. Ram Lopez
Dean, Primary Camp B

Welcome Primary!

Yesterday, we welcomed the little ones to Camp Capers. This is my favorite age group; their youth and love of life is so apparent that it rubs off onto the staff and reminds us that as we get older, we don't have to grow up. I get a lot of excitement due to the fact that many of these campers are first timers and they haven't experienced camp life yet. I can't wait to show them what they have been waiting for.
After all of the campers moved in and made their beds, they changed into their swimsuits for the swim check. Afterwards, we had a fun swim that allowed campers to meet other campers and bond with their counselors. We continued the night with some pasta and breadsticks (yum!) and then finished it with some "ice-breaker" games and chapel. Some tears were shed by homesick campers during chapel, but once they saw their comforting counselor come to their side and place their arm around them, the tears vanished as they were calmly reminded that this place can be home too.

Love to all,

Narnia – Hope abounds within us!

This is a week unlike any other in the world now known as Camp Narnia! Besides VBS my most favorite week of the year is my being present here at camp. For someone who as a child could never go to camp this is my chance to have that experience through your children. Thank you for that!
Because I am a visual learner there has to be visual props …. Lots of them! The Beaver Dam, the Stone Table, the Wardrobe, trees covered in snow to hold up the rafters and not to be missed many, many snowflakes!  It looked like a winter wonderland. But wait ….  Winter finally melts as Aslan comes near, the Pevensie children realize that they are part of the prophesy in Narnia, only to reveal spring! The snow covered trees become green and fruitful, the snow is replaced with hills, grass, sunshine and many of God’s creatures.
Last night we watched the remainder of the movie Narnia along with our sleeping bags and pillows.  It was a wonderful night for the movie with the full moon’s light streaming through the open doors of the Activities building. Then we headed off to a wonderful service in the chapel of Michael J. Talbot music, prayers, and a story written and read by Father Chuck Woehler about “Lunch with God”.

More news to follow on Friday’s edition of Narnia – Hope abounds within us.

Blessings

A Day of Dreams

Today in teaching, Cathy talked about Edmund and she likened him to Moses. The comparisons were that sometimes we are reluctant in following Gods plan and that we need to trust him. In the movie “ The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”, Edmund chooses to do his own thing by following the way of the evil Witch. Because of that, he did not get the certain blessing that his siblings got because he was too busy making his own plans. The blessings that the brother and sisters received were weapons to help regain the kingdom of Narnia. To tie everything together, Cathy talked to the kids about how we should trust Jesus with the roads he has planned for us in our lives.
At the end of the teaching, the kids got a balloon and wrote their hopes and dreams on them. They then went outside to let their balloon fly to God, in hope that He will help us achieve those hopes and dreams in the ways that He has planned.
We are now off to a Night Swim, and then we are going to have a surprise Chapel in the pool. I can’t wait!

Love to all,
     Lena B.

Intermediate Camp B Enters Into Narnia

This week is going to be a great one. The DCT (dean, chaplain, teacher) have gone above and beyond with their creativity. Yesterday, our teacher, Cathy Villani, came and decorated the activities building like the movie The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe because this week the campers will be entering into the magic world of Narnia through our teachings. I have yet to realize how she will relate the two, but knowing Cathy, she will do it wonderfully. Right now, the kids are getting ready to go to canteen and choose between either pretzels or popcorn because we will be watching the beginning of the movie to end the night. I am SO excited! I love this movie! By the reaction of the campers, they do too. In consideration that the movie is quite long, we will be watching it in 45 minute segments, so it will be fun to continue the story throughout the week. I can't wait to tell you the magical things that Jesus (and Narnia) will do for us this week.

     Love to all,
          Lena B.

Responding to God’s Presence

What does face paint, 500 water balloons, and eight made-up countries have in common?  Answer – Camp Olympics!  Campers spent the morning competing in games like water-balloon toss, synchronized swimming, tug-o-war, and discus toss.  While the events were designed to be fun, they also reminded campers of our response to God grace in our lives.

After spending time talking about gathering as a community and recognizing God’s grace and presence in our midst, we have talked about how we respond to that grace.  As we are filled with God’s love, and peace, and healing, we are called to share that with those around us.  Campers put this into practice through the Olympic games by encouraging each other, cooperating together, and just having FUN!

Stay tuned as we look at how we can carry these practices and rhythms into our life beyond camp!

Manic Monday

The sun was definitely present this morning and afternoon, but we fought through the heat while some cabins played soccer and others went to the high ropes. We had a record number of kids go off of the zip line this morning, which was a huge success. During teaching, the campers were given a block of wood and told to write down why they chose to come to camp so that it could serve as a daily reminder to live their week of camp to the fullest.
In the afternoon, the cabins enjoyed a much-needed dip in the pool or river. Campers enjoyed activities such as kayaking, fishing and tubing. Today in arts and crafts we made nametags, which is always fun. After a scrumptious dinner of chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, we gathered in the activities building to sing, worship and watch the daily slide show. There was not one person in that building that wasn’t jumping and singing along.
Right now, everyone is on the centrum playing Ball-O-Le’ and I am very eager to go and join them. What the campers don’t know is that after canteen we will be having a Night Swim for our second activity. Night swims are always so much fun, I am so excited! I will check in tomorrow and tell you how it went.

Love to all,
      Lena B.

Junior High Camp B has Begun!

Hi Friends!
Junior high camp has only officially been in session for two and a half hours and we are already having the time of our lives. We began camp with the traditional swim check and pool time which was a great start to our evening together. Our kitchen crew cooked an awesome meal of spaghetti and meatballs with salad and chocolate cake! Following dinner we gathered for worship where all 180 campers and staff jumped, danced, clapped, and raised their joyful voices in worship. The staff has been introduced and the campers are currently performing what we call "rule skits" for everyone to learn the rules of Camp Capers. We cannot be more excited for the week to come filled with teachings, meaningful conversations, community building, joyful worship and praise, sharing meals, arts and crafts, ultimate frisbee and ball-ole, kayaking, swimming, zip-lining, watching movies, and screaming until our voices are hoarse. Stay connected throughout the week by following the pictures and blogs that our wonderfully talented photographer, Lena, posts and updates daily. Don't forget to send your camper an email through ultracamp to remind them that they are loved! Your campers are in good hands, and have already begun to meet new friends and bond with their cabin-mates and counselors. As a staff, we will give everything we have this week in hopes that your child will tangibly see, feel, and experience God's Kingdom on earth, through this authentic community that we stive to build here at Camp.

"The word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind-glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish." John 1:14 (MSG)

Until tomorrow,
Be Blessed!

In Christ,
Emily Vandewalle, Staff Director

A Leap of Faith

This morning, it was my turn to work the Crow’s Nest. For those of you who do not know, the Crow’s Nest is a small 4ftx4ft ledge that you climb onto in order to zip off of the zip line. Needless to say, with two people up there, it gets pretty squished. My job of facilitating the Crow’s Nest involves me clipping the camper into the harness, transferring them onto the zip line, and sending them on their way. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Some campers have done this before, so it is a breeze for them, while others are extremely scared of heights and it took them all of their effort just to climb up the ladder to get to the zip. Considering that I am up there for a couple hours, I have a lot of “me” time. But today was different.
I didn’t have just “me” time, I had “me” and “God” time. As I was sitting on the ledge, awaiting the next “zipper”, I looked around and let my head drop onto my back, leaving me gazing at the sky. I saw the barn in the distance, surrounded by acres of green and topped off with plush, white clouds. The breeze was cool, and the sun was present, but not hot. It was perfect.  All of a sudden I started to pray, aloud. Let me tell you that I do not do this often. Not the praying part, the aloud part. I can’t put my finger on where this sudden burst of devotion came from, but I am so grateful that it happened.
God saw me atop my perch and called upon me to not just be a facilitator, but to be an advocate for Christ; in whichever way I choose to do so. Coincidentally, the next camper that came upon my perch was scared out of their mind. Trembling with fear, I could see the anxiety in her eyes. As she stood up next to me, she clenched my forearm. I then realized that she was putting all of her faith into my hands. I calmly told her to take a deep breath and to look around at the beautiful surroundings. Immediately, her face became serene and she slowly sat down onto the edge of the nest. I looked her in the eyes and told her that she could do it; all she had to do was jump. Next thing I knew, there she went, zipping away into the corridor of trees.
Later on, that same girl came up to me and told me thank you. She was glad that I had convinced her to go and complimented me on how comfortable and safe I made her feel. When she walked away, I started to tear up. That was the kindest thing I had heard in a long time.
That jump off of the Crow’s Nest is more than just a way down; it is a leap of faith. God places these obstacles before us so that we do not have to conquer them alone; it is a reminder that no matter what, somebody will be by your side. I served as God’s wing(wo)man today by helping God help others conquer their fears. Not only did they have to have the faith to jump off that ledge, but I had to realize that the challenge faced before me was that I had to have the faith that I could send each and every one of these campers down that zip line with confidence.
God is always working around us, you just have to stop and listen and take that leap of faith.

Love to all,
     Lena B.

Epiphany at Camp

We continued our theme of The Year in a Week today. We are celebrating Epiphany. Right now the campers are participating in a Wise Men Hunt. We had a pancake supper tonight since tomorrow will be Ash Wednesday. The rest of the week will include Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter and Pentecost.

One of the fun things we started today was Prayer Ninjas. Yes. Prayer Ninjas. About twenty of the campers volunteered to sneak up on one of their friends and surprise them with a prayer. Our Prayer Ninjas will share their experience with us tomorrow as part of our teaching.

I can’t tell you what a joy it is to share in the life of these campers. It is always amazing to see God at work at Camp Capers. But it is especially incredible to see high school students drop their guard and allow God into their hearts.

The staff continues to do an amazing job of serving and loving these kids. It’s already been a great week. I can’t wait what God will do next.
