The Last One

         
          As I type up my last post for the summer, I have to say thank you. To all the parents, campers and staff, thanks for giving me a summer that I will remember forever. Gathered in the the Steves Hall Commons Room for the last time, I look around and see smiling faces laughing and enjoying each others presence. This group of kids will never be reunited like this ever again. When a lot of us will come back in the fall for Vocare, Steves Hall will be gone but the memories will still be fresh in our minds.
          We finished off this week with an emotional Bonfire where the staff was serenaded by a couple of session staff and our Staff Director, Emily Vandewalle. Some tears were shed as we all took it in. Never again will I see the stars shining so bright. The flames of the fire gave us just enough dim light in the background to let us see the faces of bittersweet smiles.
         This week was great. I am so glad that we got to finish the summer with Primary campers. These kids gave us the energy we needed to finish this summer strong.

As I sign off for the last time, I want you all to know that this place is special. The staff and kids that come through these gates come at the times they do because God planned it that way. I hope that one day when I come back all grown up, I can see the little Primary and Intermediate campers on staff loving each other just as we did.

The Summer Staff of 2012 will always live on in my heart.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

Greetings from the most wonderful place on earth – Camp Capers!

It is the most wonderful place because it is one of those amazing places where God’s Spirit roams freely capturing the hearts and imaginations of young and old alike.  In this place many of God’s children, myself included, discovered the intense love of God and a life-changing invitation to follow Jesus in service and ministry.

As Dean of Primary Camp B I am privileged to share this week with the campers and staff here this week.  I am privileged to be a part of what God desires to do in the lives of His children.  I am privileged to  watch God continue to form and grow both campers and staff into “the stature of the fullness of God.” (Eph. 4.13)

We are spending this week talking about “Abounding in Hope” (Romans 15.13).  Today we heard about Moses and the people of Israel’s journey of hope to the land of promise.  Over the next couple of days we will look at other Biblical stories in which God’s people experience and extend hope.  Our time in chapel both in the morning and in the evening is a wonderful time of learning about our God of abundant hope and learning many new songs praising Him.

Of course, the campers are making nametags in Arts and Crafts, playing Capture the Flag, swimming, eating wonderful food and doing all the great things that makes a week at Camp so much fun.  Mealtimes are rocking with cabin chants and everyone is enjoying spending time with friends old and new.  In short, we are all having a wonderful time!

Thank you for entrusting your campers to those of us who serve here this week.  Know that we are doing our best to make sure your camper has an amazing time and, more importantly, experiences the love of God in a way that will shape their lives for eternity!

Dean, Primary Camp B

Welcome Primary!

         Yesterday, we welcomed the little ones to Camp Capers. This is my favorite age group; their youth and love of life is so apparent that it rubs off onto the staff and reminds us that as we get older, we don't have to grow up. I get a lot of excitement due to the fact that many of these campers are first timers and they haven't experienced camp life yet. I can't wait to show them what they have been waiting for.

          After all of the campers moved in and made their beds, they changed into their swimsuits for the swim check. Afterwards, we had a fun swim that allowed campers to meet other campers and bond with their counselors. We continued the night with some pasta and breadsticks (yum!) and then finished it with some "ice-breaker" games and chapel. Some tears were shed by homesick campers during chapel, but once they saw their comforting counselor come to their side and place their arm around them, the tears vanished as they were calmly reminded that this place can be home too.

Narnia – Hope abounds within us!

          This is a week unlike any other in the world now known as Camp Narnia! Besides VBS my most favorite week of the year is my being present here at camp. For someone who as a child could never go to camp this is my chance to have that experience through your children. Thank you for that!

          Because I am a visual learner there has to be visual props …. Lots of them! The Beaver Dam, the Stone Table, the Wardrobe, trees covered in snow to hold up the rafters and not to be missed many, many snowflakes!  It looked like a winter wonderland. But wait ….  Winter finally melts as Aslan comes near, the Pevensie children realize that they are part of the prophesy in Narnia, only to reveal spring! The snow covered trees become green and fruitful, the snow is replaced with hills, grass, sunshine and many of God’s creatures.

          Last night we watched the remainder of the movie Narnia along with our sleeping bags and pillows.  It was a wonderful night for the movie with the full moon’s light streaming through the open doors of the Activities building. Then we headed off to a wonderful service in the chapel of Michael J. Talbot music, prayers, and a story written and read by Father Chuck Woehler about “Lunch with God”.
